Methodology

A short briefing was given to our respondents before the collection of their data on the follow points:

• Introduction of ourselves.
• The purpose of our research.
• The estimated time needed.
• Instructions of what they were supposed to do.
• Confidentiality was assured.
• The respondents would be informed of their BMI immediately after the height and weight measurements.
• Aftercare instructions on what to do if their BMI falls above or below the healthy range.

Data Collection:

Date: 13th May 2010
Time: 10 00 – 11 00
Venue: Level 2 Outside Shopping Arcade.
Sample size: 60 (30 Female, 30 Male)

Instruments used:
(1) Analog Weighing Machine
(2) Measuring tape
(3) Calculator

How was the data collection done?

Precision:

To ensure accuracy of the data, the respondents’ height and weight were to be measured twice and the average was then taken. The recording of raw data was as follows:

• The data collection was done in the morning to minimise inaccuracy in measurements. E.g. Heavy lunches taken by respondents may affect the results.

• The data of 30 males and 30 females were collected to ensure equal weightage of both genders.

Setup:
• We setup our station outside the shopping arcade whereby there was more mobility of the crowd.
• 1m was measured exactly from the floor to the 1m mark. The measuring tape was then hoisted from the 1m mark up against the wall.
• The weighing machine was then placed nearby next to the measuring tape.

Tasking:

• There are a total of 7 members in our group.
• We then assigned different tasks to each members:
o One member was allocated to the height station
o One member for the weight station.
o One member for the recording of the data.
o One member for the calculation of the respondents’ BMI.
o Two members were to approach potential respondents.
o One photographer for recording of the whole process =D

Procedure:
1. We randomly select passersby for our data collection.
2. We approached them and gave them an introduction of ourselves, our project purpose and seeked their permission to record down their heights and weights. We gave them assurance that their information will be kept strictly confidential. After seeking their consent, we proceeded to the recording station.
3. The respondents were told to remove their shoes and place their belongings aside.
4. They were then instructed to put their back against the measuring tape and their heights were recorded twice and the average was taken.
5. The respondents then proceeded to stand on the weighing machine to measure their weight twice and the average was taken.
6. We then calculated their BMI and informed them whether they are within a healthy range with regards to the following table released by MOH (Ministry of Health).

7. Upon completion of the data recording, we thanked them sincerely and offered
gifts for their kind co-operation and participation.
